Mamalette recruits & trains experienced mothers in various neighbourhoods to act as health champions, sharing important lifesaving maternal and infant health information, through peer support, group meetings & awareness campaigns.

We train mothers to become part of the solution rather than part of the problem.
Once trained, our mothers launch motherhood cell groups in their neighbourhoods where they share life saving health information to women, pregnant and young mothers living around them.

We offer mothers the opportunity to change the world. To become part of the solution rather than part of the problem. Our mothers wake up everyday with the satisfaction of knowing that they are engaged in solving a problem that will otherwise remain unsolved. And feel good knowing they are making a difference in the life of others.

What’s The Money For?

While we started our program leveraging on meagre resources and have done this pretty economically, we need your support to recruit and train more women and open more motherhood cell groups in more urban-poor communities.

The Mamalette Story

Anike Lawal founded Mamalette as an online platform for pregnant women and new mothers in Nigeria in 2013. Mamalette has also held a series of events for Nigerian parents called Mamalette Live! in various cities in Nigeria. At Mamalette women have the opportunity to consult with experts and get answers to their health questions. Since it’s launch Mamalette has been the go-to platform for hundreds of thousands of pregnant women  and new parents looking for culturally relevant content. After coming across hundreds of stories of women dying and infants dying she realised that maternal and infant mortality wasn’t something that was only affecting women in rural parts of the country, women and infants living in urban cities were dying from preventable causes.

Every single day, Nigeria loses about 2,300 under-five year olds and 145 women of childbearing age. This makes the country the second largest contributor to the under–five and maternal mortality rate in the world. (UNICEF)

In one week alone, she was told about 3 women who died while giving birth and this is what made her begin to think about how to create a solution to this problem.  After months or research, focus groups and one on one interviews, Anike realised that she wasn’t powerless and that there were many women like her, who were tired of the status quo and the fear that comes with being pregnant in Nigeria and wanted to do something about it.

Anike also consulted with her father, Dr Adebiyi Edun a medical doctor and public health expert with 25+ years experience working on USAID, DFID, Scottish Aid and Nigerian Government projects and was shocked to discover that he had also worked on many maternal and infant health projects and the same problems she had noticed, of women not utilising health facilities around them were exactly the same that he had experienced for the past 20 years.

After much consultation with her father and various health experts well versed in maternal and infant health. She created the Mamalette Champions program where experienced mothers living in urban-poor neighbourhoods are recruited and trained to be health champions, sharing important lifesaving maternal and infant health information, through peer support, group meetings and awareness campaigns.

Till date Mamalette has trained 70 women and is now running 43 motherhood cell groups in 3 cities in Nigeria. Mamalette intends to continue to provide information to cell members through regular prenatal/post natal health tips via SMS. The goal is to help reduce the preventable causes of maternal and infant mortality and to increase health facility usage for pregnancy and newborn care in urban-poor communities.
